A student pilot managed to land a plane safely after her instructor opened the aircraft door and jumped out mid-flight during a lesson in Argentina.

According to reports, instructor Leandro Bertazzo, 42, began acting unusually during the flight. At one point, he instructed the student to take control of the Cessna 150, a two-seat aircraft, and asked her to stay calm and follow instructions.

“As soon as he said that, Leandro took off his headset, set his phone aside and opened the door — something very difficult to do because of the air pressure,” said Eduardo Alvarez, from the Flying Parrot Córdoba school, to the Argentine newspaper Clarín.

Even alone, the student managed to maintain control of the aircraft and contacted the control tower. Guided by air traffic controllers, she carried out a safe landing at the airport without being injured.

The instructor died as a result of the fall. The circumstances that led to his decision to leave the aircraft are still being investigated by Argentine authorities, who are looking into whether he was facing personal or mental health problems.

The episode drew attention because of the student’s reaction, as she managed to complete the landing despite an extreme situation, following the instructions received by radio and avoiding an even greater accident.
